ChatGPT Plus vs Claude Pro: price, limits and apps

ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro? Same list price, different usage meters. How each counts usage, its coding agent, models, apps and billing, with sources.

Updated November 3, 2026Markdown version

ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro have the same monthly list price on the official US websites, and each includes its company's coding agent: Codex with Plus, Claude Code with Pro. They differ in how each plan meters usage, how you can pay, how much text a model reads at once, and the next plan up.

The vendors' own prices as published at the source on the date checked; they can change. Tax: per Anthropic's pages, some countries include tax in the displayed price and others add it at checkout.

Only Claude Pro can be paid by the year: Anthropic sells it yearly at a lower monthly rate billed up front, and says the prices on its pricing page don't include applicable tax. OpenAI says Plus can't be paid yearly or several months in advance. Below Plus, OpenAI also sells ChatGPT Go.

In a phone app, the App Store or Google Play handles the payment, and the store price in your country can differ from the website. For local prices, read ChatGPT Plus price in Egypt, Claude Pro and Max price in Egypt or Prices in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Same price, two different usage meters#

The biggest day-to-day difference is how each plan counts usage. Checked on 2026-11-03:

ChatGPT PlusClaude Pro
ChatMay have message caps at busy times, which vary with system conditionsCounts toward the 5-hour and weekly limits
Coding agentCodex and ChatGPT Work draw on one allowance, separate from ChatClaude Code and Claude on the web and desktop count toward one set of limits
Time windowsCodex estimates per five hours; weekly limits may also applyThe 5-hour limit starts with your first message and resets in full five hours later; the weekly limit resets at a set time each week
What uses moreThe model, the task size, and cloud tasks over local onesThe model, chat length and complexity, the features you use and the effort level
Where to checkThe Codex usage dashboard, or /status in Codex CLISettings > Usage, or /usage in Claude Code

OpenAI gives ranges; Anthropic doesn't. For Plus, OpenAI estimates Codex use per five hours, from 5–45 local messages on its heaviest model to 350–3,000 on its lightest. These are estimates, not fixed limits, and cloud tasks can use more. Anthropic publishes no message count for Pro, so watch Settings > Usage for a week.

OpenAI's meter changes in December. OpenAI's help center says that, starting in December, Plus usage will draw on one allowance across ChatGPT and Codex, measured in tokens, and Instant chat won't count toward it. Claude Pro already meters chat and Claude Code together, so after the change both plans work this way.

Pick the model to stretch your plan. On both plans a lighter model goes further, so keep the larger models for the hard steps. Past a limit, you can wait for the reset, buy ChatGPT credits on Plus, or turn on usage credits, billed at standard API rates, on Pro. For Claude Code in particular, read Claude Code usage limits.

Which models does each plan include?#

Pro adds Opus to the Sonnet and Haiku of Claude's no-cost plan. Fable is paid with usage credits on Pro, while Max includes it up to half your weekly limit. Plus includes OpenAI's GPT models with advanced reasoning, and its newest models run in Codex and ChatGPT Work, not in Chat. To choose a model, read Which Claude model to use or Which GPT model to use.

Which apps and tools come with each plan?#

ChatGPT Plus covers:

  • ChatGPT on the web, phone and desktop, with deep research, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, image creation, and extensions for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Google Sheets.
  • Codex on the web, in the CLI, in the IDE extension, on iOS and in the ChatGPT desktop app.
  • Codex cloud on eligible Plus accounts as OpenAI rolls it out, plus GitHub code review and Slack.

Claude Pro covers:

  • Claude on the web, iOS, Android and desktop, with web search, files, code execution, memory, connected apps and Artifacts.
  • Claude Code, also on the web and in Slack, plus Research, Claude in Chrome and Claude for Microsoft 365.
  • Handing off and scheduling tasks, Claude Dashboards (beta), Claude Science, and projects without the no-cost plan's limit of five.

How each app works with 5abeer is on its page: ChatGPT, Codex, Claude and Claude Code.

Which plan fits how you work?#

ChatGPT Plus may fit if:

  • You already work in ChatGPT and want Codex and ChatGPT Work on the same plan.
  • You want Codex's automatic code review on GitHub with a personal plan. Anthropic's Code Review is for Team and Enterprise.
  • You want priority access at busy times without moving to a higher plan.

Claude Pro may fit if:

  • You work in Claude Code or Claude Desktop and want one set of limits for both.
  • You work with long documents or large codebases, where a context window of up to 1M tokens helps.
  • You want to pay by the year at a lower monthly rate.

ChatGPT's no-cost plan includes Codex in limited form; Claude Code starts at Pro. Using both officially means two subscriptions and two bills.

Can one plan run both ChatGPT and Claude?#

Not with the official plans: OpenAI and Anthropic each sell a plan for their own apps only. A 5abeer Bundle plan runs ChatGPT Desktop, Codex, Claude Desktop and Claude Code, plus Google Antigravity, through 5abeer AI on Mac, Windows and Linux.

  • Every Bundle plan runs every official app, from the smallest to the largest. The plans differ in usage limits only.
  • Each 5abeer plan has its own 5-hour and weekly limits, explained in Usage limits. We don't promise limits matching the official plans.
  • On your own official account: you sign in to each app as usual. Activated within minutes, in desktop apps through 5abeer AI, not in the ChatGPT or Claude phone apps or on their websites.

Frequently asked questions#

Is ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro cheaper?#

On the official US websites the monthly list price is the same. Only Claude Pro has a yearly option at a lower monthly rate, and phone app prices can differ by country.

Which is better for coding, Codex on Plus or Claude Code on Pro?#

It depends on how you work. Both agents work in the terminal, an IDE, the web and Slack. Pro puts Claude Code and Claude chat on one set of limits, with a context window of up to 1M tokens. If you code daily, run the same task in both and compare how much allowance it uses.

Does either coding agent come with a no-cost plan?#

Codex, yes, in limited form: OpenAI includes it across ChatGPT plans, including the no-cost plan and Go. Claude Code, no: Anthropic includes it from Pro up.

What changes in ChatGPT Plus usage in December?#

OpenAI says Plus usage will be counted in tokens on one allowance across ChatGPT and Codex, Instant chat won't count, and Settings → Usage will show the combined usage and reset times. It expects most users won't wait for a reset more often than they do now.

What comes after Plus or Pro?#

OpenAI's next plan is ChatGPT Pro, in three tiers, and its Codex page says Pro plans currently have no five-hour limit. Anthropic's are Max, with five times Pro's usage, and Ultra, with ten times Pro's weekly usage and no 5-hour limit on verified accounts. Each step up is compared in ChatGPT Plus vs Pro and Claude Pro vs Max.

Can one subscription cover ChatGPT and Claude?#

Not with the official plans. A 5abeer Bundle plan runs the official desktop apps of both companies through 5abeer AI, as explained in One subscription for all AI apps.
