Claude Pro vs Max: which one do you need?

Claude Pro fits most people who use Claude daily for writing, study or light coding. Claude Max gives five times Pro's usage every five hours and every week, for long sessions and heavy Claude Code use. Anthropic's top plan is now Ultra. All three include Claude Code and differ in usage. Their official prices are in the table below.

How much do Claude Pro, Max and Ultra cost?#

What is the difference between Claude Pro and Max?#

This is how Anthropic describes each plan on its pricing page and support pages, as we read them on 2026-11-01:

The Max wording comes from Anthropic's Max plan page, and the Ultra wording from its Ultra plan page. Anthropic updates these pages from time to time, so check the date above and the source before you decide.

What happened to Max 5x and Max 20x?#

In October 2026 Anthropic renamed its plans. Max 5x is now simply called Max, and Max 20x is now called Ultra. Anthropic says existing Max 20x subscribers move to Ultra automatically, with no price change. Older articles and videos may still use the old names, so this is how they map:

How do the 5-hour and weekly limits work?#

Anthropic gives most paid plans two limits:

• The 5-hour limit starts with the first message you send and resets in full five hours later, according to Anthropic's usage limits page.
• The weekly limit caps your total use over the week, even if you never reach the 5-hour limit.

On Max and Ultra, Anthropic also sets a separate weekly limit for Fable, as its usage credits page explains. Ultra removes the 5-hour limit for verified accounts, but the weekly limit stays.

Is Claude Pro enough for Claude Code?#

Anthropic includes Claude Code in all three plans, so the question is how much you use it, not whether you can. A practical way to decide:

• Start with Pro if you use Claude Code for a few tasks a day.
• If you reach the 5-hour limit often in the middle of your work, Max gives you five times the usage in the same windows.
• If you work in Claude Code most of the day and the 5-hour limit keeps stopping you, Ultra removes it on verified accounts, with a weekly limit still in place.

Frequently asked questions#

Is Claude Max worth it over Pro?#

It is if you reach Pro's 5-hour limit often. Max gives five times Pro's usage in the same 5-hour and weekly windows. If you rarely reach the limit, Pro is enough.

Is Claude Max the same as Max 5x?#

Yes, for Anthropic's plans: after the October 2026 rename, Max 5x is called Max and Max 20x is called Ultra. 5abeer renamed its plans the same way, Max (formerly Max 5x) and Ultra (formerly Max 20x); they are 5abeer plans with their own limits.

Does Claude Ultra have a usage limit?#

Yes. Anthropic says Ultra has no 5-hour limit on verified accounts, but it still has a weekly limit, plus a separate weekly limit for Fable.

Does Claude Pro include Claude Code?#

Yes. Anthropic lists Claude Code in Pro, Max and Ultra.

Can I use Fable on Claude Pro?#

Anthropic says Pro pays for Fable with usage credits, while Max and Ultra include it up to half your weekly limit.
