AI subscription vs API: the difference and which you need
An AI subscription runs the provider's own apps for a fixed price. An API bills your own code by usage. How they differ and how to choose.
An AI subscription is a fixed-price plan for using a provider's own apps, such as a chat app or a coding app, within usage limits. An API is pay-as-you-go access for your own code, billed by usage. OpenAI, Anthropic and Google bill the two separately, so paying for one does not set up the other.
What an AI subscription is#
A subscription is a plan you pay for at a fixed price per period. It unlocks more use of the provider's own apps: the chat app on the web, desktop and phone, and coding apps such as Claude Code or Codex. You sign in with your account and use the app as it is. The plan sets how much you can use it, through usage limits that reset over time.
A subscription does not give you a key to call the models from your own code. Anthropic says it directly: "Claude paid plans and the Claude Console are separate products designed for different purposes."
What an API is#
An API lets your own code, scripts and tools call a model directly. You create an account on the provider's developer platform, add a payment method or credit, and create an API key. Each request is billed by what it uses, mostly the tokens it reads and writes. Google, for example, prices the Gemini API on input, output and cached tokens.
The API is what you need to build something: a website feature, a bot, an automation, or a tool that asks for an API key.
The difference at a glance#
| Compare | AI subscription | API |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | People who use the provider's apps | Developers, and tools that call models from code |
| Where you use it | The provider's own apps | Your code, scripts, and tools that accept an API key |
| How you pay | A fixed price per period | By usage, mostly per token |
| What limits your use | The plan's usage limits | Your credit and spend, and the provider's rate limits |
| Where you sign up | The plan page in the app | The provider's developer platform |
Does a subscription include the API?#
No, not as one product. All three providers bill them apart:
- OpenAI: "ChatGPT and the API platform have separate billing systems," and "API usage is billed separately from your ChatGPT subscription."
- Anthropic: "A paid Claude subscription enhances your chat experience, and the Claude API is billed separately." If you want both, you sign up for a plan and set up the Console separately.
- Google: "Direct use of the Gemini API (such as using API keys or external applications) is billed and managed separately."
Some higher plans now add a monthly API credit as a benefit. Anthropic, for example, says "Claude Max, Ultra, and Team plans include monthly credits for the Claude API." Even then, API use is set up and billed in the provider's developer platform, apart from the chat plan. These are Anthropic's own plans, not 5abeer's plans of the same name. Which one you need#
- You chat, write or code inside the official apps: a subscription. A fixed price is easier to plan for when you use the apps every day.
- You build something that calls a model from code: the API. You pay only for what your code uses.
- You do both: you need both, and you pay for each one separately.
How it works at 5abeer#
5abeer offers both, and keeps them apart the same way. A Bundle subscription runs the official apps, such as ChatGPT, Codex, Claude Code and Google Antigravity, through the 5abeer AI app for less than their official price, with a 5-hour limit and a weekly limit. The API gives you every model priced per token at about 70% below its official price, paid as you use it from your balance, with an API key per provider. Details in Subscription or API, and plan prices are on the pricing page.
This is the default model's price per million tokens, ours next to the official one:
Official price from the provider's page, checked October 19, 2026.
Each model's API price sits next to its official price on the API page.
Your subscription and your balance are separate: API key usage never counts against your plan's limits, and the subscription never draws on your balance unless you turn on Continue from the wallet. To call the models from code, start with the Quickstart.
Questions#
Can I use my chat subscription as an API key?#
No. A subscription signs you in to the provider's apps. An API key comes from the provider's developer platform, and its usage is billed separately from the subscription.
Is the API cheaper than a subscription?#
It depends on how much you use. With the API you pay for each request, so light use costs little and heavy use can cost more than a plan. A subscription costs the same each period within its limits. For a worked example with current Claude prices, read when the API is cheaper.
Do I need to code to use the API?#
Mostly yes. The API is called from code. Some coding tools ask for an API key and call the API for you, so you can use it without writing the calls yourself.
Does my 5abeer API usage count against my plan?#
No. API key usage is paid from your balance and never counts against your plan's limits. A 5abeer subscription key is not an API key: for code and automation, create an API key.
