Use Roo Code with a 5abeer API key: provider and profiles
Connect Roo Code to 5abeer with the OpenAI Compatible provider, paste your API key and pick a model for each mode with configuration profiles.
To use Roo Code with 5abeer, open Settings, go to Providers and set API Provider to OpenAI Compatible. Enter https://api.5abeer.ai/v1 as the Base URL, paste your 5abeer key in API Key and type a model id such as claude-sonnet-5.5 in Model. Every request is then paid from your 5abeer balance.
What you need#
- Roo Code already installed in VS Code.
- A 5abeer API key for the provider of the model you will use. A key works with one provider's models only, so a Claude key runs Claude models (create a key).
- Some balance on your account (how to pay).
A 5abeer subscription key will not work here. Plans are for the supported apps, and Roo Code is not one of them. To use the models from Roo Code, create an API key that is paid from your balance.
Which Roo Code API provider to choose#
Roo Code picks its connection in the API Provider dropdown. Choose OpenAI Compatible. 5abeer serves the OpenAI Chat Completions format at /v1 for Claude, GPT and Gemini models, so this one provider covers every model, as long as the key matches the model's provider. You also type the model id yourself, so you are not limited to a fixed list.
The Anthropic provider is a second option for Claude only. Its settings have a Use custom base URL checkbox, so it can point at 5abeer with a Claude key. The setup is in its own section below.
Roo Code's docs say it uses native tool calling only, and the model you select must support OpenAI-compatible tool calling. After setup, run a short task that reads a file to confirm tools work with your model.

Create a 5abeer API key#
In the dashboard, open API → Keys, choose New key and pick the provider. For the example below, pick Claude. Copy the key when it appears.
Open the provider settings#
In Roo Code, click the gear icon to open Settings and go to Providers.
Fill in the fields#
- API Provider: OpenAI Compatible.
- Base URL:
https://api.5abeer.ai/v1 - API Key: your 5abeer key.
- Model:
claude-sonnet-5.5. Type the id exactly as it appears on the models list.
Set the model options#
The same page has optional model settings: Max Output Tokens, Context Window, Input Price and Output Price. Roo uses them for limits and cost estimates. Take the values from the model's page, for example
claude-sonnet-5.5, instead of guessing. Leave Image Support and Computer Use as they are unless the model's page says it supports them.Save and test#
Save the settings, start a new task and send a short request. If a reply comes back, the setup works.
Use the Anthropic provider with a Claude key#
If you prefer the Anthropic provider for Claude models, set these fields:
- API Provider: Anthropic.
- Anthropic API Key: your 5abeer Claude key.
- Use custom base URL: tick the box and enter
https://api.5abeer.ai, without/v1. The Anthropic format adds/v1/messagesitself. - Model: pick the model from the dropdown.
This provider takes a Claude key only. Its model list comes from Roo Code, so if the model you want is not in the dropdown, use OpenAI Compatible, where you type the id.
Best model for Roo Code#
Start with claude-sonnet-5.5 for everyday coding. Move to claude-opus-5.5 for long, hard tasks where the extra cost pays off. These are the current Claude models:

One model per mode with configuration profiles#
Roo Code saves provider settings in API configuration profiles. Each profile holds its own provider, key and model, and you can link a profile to each mode. This is how you run Claude in one mode and GPT in another.
Each 5abeer key works with one provider's models. If you call a GPT model with a Claude key, the request returns MODEL_PLATFORM_NOT_ALLOWED. So two families need two keys and two profiles, with the same base URL. Both keys draw on the same balance.
Create a second key#
In the dashboard, create a second key and pick GPT as its provider.
Add a profile for each key#
In Settings → Providers, click the + button next to the profile selector and name the profile. Make two:
5abeer-claude: OpenAI Compatible, Base URLhttps://api.5abeer.ai/v1, your Claude key, Modelclaude-sonnet-5.5.5abeer-gpt: OpenAI Compatible, the same Base URL, your GPT key, ModelYOUR_GPT_MODEL_ID(copy the id from the models list).
Link each mode to a profile#
Roo's docs say that in the Prompts tab you can associate a configuration profile with each mode. For example, link Architect to
5abeer-gptand Code to5abeer-claude.
Each task also remembers the profile it started with, so reopening an old task keeps its model even after you change the global choice. The same pattern works for Gemini with a Gemini key and YOUR_GEMINI_MODEL_ID. These are the current GPT and Gemini models:
GPT-6.1 SolInput$0.60Output$3Context922K
GPT-6 AstraInput$3Output$15Context—

All models and pricesCheap API for Roo Code: control what you pay#
Each request is paid from your balance by the tokens it uses, at the model's 5abeer price (pricing and balance). The price block above shows the official price next to ours. An agent can send many requests in one task, so set limits on the key itself. You can control every key: a spend limit, an expiry date and an IP allow-list (key controls). A separate key for each profile also keeps each mode's usage apart in the dashboard.
Common errors and fixes#
INVALID_API_KEYor a 401: the key is wrong or was revoked. Paste it again in the profile.MODEL_PLATFORM_NOT_ALLOWED: the model belongs to another provider than the key. Use the matching key, or switch to the profile that has it.- Wrong base URL: OpenAI Compatible needs
https://api.5abeer.ai/v1. The Anthropic custom base URL ishttps://api.5abeer.ai, without/v1. - Model not found: the model id has a typo or a different spelling. Copy it from the models list.
INSUFFICIENT_BALANCE: your balance doesn't cover the request. Top up and retry.
Every code and what it means is in Errors and fixes.
Questions#
Is Roo Code still maintained?#
No. The GitHub repository was archived on 2026-05-15 and its README says the extension was shut down. The settings in this guide match its last docs. For a maintained tool, see the Cline and Kilo Code guides.
Where does the Roo Code API key go?#
With OpenAI Compatible, paste your 5abeer key in API Key. With the Anthropic provider, the field is Anthropic API Key, and it takes a Claude key.
Can I use my 5abeer subscription in Roo Code?#
No. Plans run only the supported apps, and Roo Code is not one of them. Create an API key and pay for Roo Code usage from your balance.
Does the Anthropic provider accept a custom base URL?#
Yes. Tick Use custom base URL and enter https://api.5abeer.ai with a 5abeer Claude key. For GPT or Gemini models, use OpenAI Compatible.
Can I use a different model in each mode?#
Yes. Create one configuration profile per model and link each mode to a profile in the Prompts tab. Profiles for different providers need different keys.
What goes in Context Window and Max Output Tokens?#
The values on the model's page in the 5abeer models list. Don't guess them; wrong limits can cut replies short.
