Card declined on ChatGPT, Claude or the API: how to fix it
Why OpenAI and Anthropic decline cards, what to check with your bank, and other ways to pay for ChatGPT, Claude or API credits.
A card is usually declined on ChatGPT, Claude or the OpenAI API because your bank blocks or caps international online purchases, the billing details don't match the bank's records, or the 3D Secure step wasn't completed. Some cards are refused by type: OpenAI doesn't accept prepaid cards for API credits. Check these, retry, then ask your bank.
Why was my card declined?#
Anthropic and OpenAI each list the reasons on their help pages. This is what they say, as we read them on 2026-11-01:
| Anthropic (Claude) | OpenAI (ChatGPT and API) | |
|---|---|---|
| The bank | Your bank may be declining the payment, so contact it | Your payment may have been blocked by your bank |
| Card details | The billing address must match the one your bank has | Check the card number, expiry date, CVC and billing address, including the postal code |
| Country | Your billing location must be a supported one | You and your card issuer must be in a supported country (renewals page) |
| Card type | Credit and debit cards; no PayPal or Venmo | Standard credit or debit cards; no prepaid cards for API credits |
Anthropic adds two more checks: complete the 3D Secure verification your bank asks for, by a one-time code or an approval in the bank's app, and make sure the card has enough funds. If the card is still declined, it suggests trying again or using another payment method.
Check the country first. Anthropic publishes its supported regions, and Egypt, for example, is on the list. If your country is listed, the cause is more likely the card settings or the bank.
What should you ask your bank?#
Only your bank sees the actual reason a payment was declined, and both companies send you to it. Ask these four questions:
- Are international online purchases turned on? If your card was issued outside the US, a payment to OpenAI or Anthropic is usually treated as an international purchase. Some banks keep this off until you turn it on in their app or by phone.
- Does the limit cover the full amount? That means the price plus tax and any fee your bank charges on foreign currency transactions.
- Did fraud checks stop it? A first payment to a new merchant abroad is sometimes held until you confirm it.
- Does the card work online at all? Some cards are set up for local purchases and cash withdrawals only.
How do you fix a declined card?#
Turn on international payments#
In your bank's app or by phone, turn on international and online purchases, and raise the limit if it is below the amount.
Re-enter the details#
Type the card number, expiry date and CVC again, and enter the billing address and postal code exactly as your bank has them.
Complete the verification#
If your bank sends a one-time code or asks you to approve the payment in its app, finish that step, and don't close the payment page while it waits.
Use a standard card#
Pay with a regular credit or debit card. OpenAI doesn't accept prepaid cards for API credits, and Anthropic doesn't take PayPal or Venmo.
Retry, then call the bank#
Try once more after a few minutes. If it fails again, call your bank before you retry, because several declined attempts in a row can look like fraud to the bank.
Can you subscribe from the phone app instead?#
For a ChatGPT or Claude subscription, yes. If you subscribe in the iPhone or Android app, Apple or Google bills you with the payment method on your Apple or Google account, not through the card form on the website.
- Anthropic says that for web subscriptions it only accepts credit or debit cards, and that subscriptions bought in Claude for iOS or Android are handled by the App Store or Google Play, where you manage the payment method and receipts.
- OpenAI says ChatGPT subscriptions bought in the App Store or Google Play are billed in local currency, so the price can differ from the website.
This only works for subscriptions. API credits are bought by card on each company's developer platform, so the phone app doesn't help there.
What if the card is declined when buying API credits?#
Buying API credits is a separate purchase from a subscription, with the same card checks. This is how the official APIs are paid for, each row with its source and the date we checked it:
| Service | Item | Value | Note | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anthropic | Supported countries | Egypt is on the list | — | www.anthropic.com |
| Anthropic | How you pay in the Claude Console | Prepaid credits, bought by card | Under Billing, then Buy credits. | support.claude.com |
| OpenAI | Smallest API credit purchase | $5 | Prepaid credits that usage is deducted from. Read from a search result for the page, because the page itself didn't open for us. | help.openai.com |
Another way to call the models from your code is a 5abeer API key, paid from your 5abeer balance as you use it. Your balance is credited automatically once the payment completes.
- OpenAI-compatible: change the base URL and keep your code.
- Compatible with the Anthropic Messages API.
- Control every key: a spend limit, an expiry date and an IP allow-list.
These are the base URLs:
https://api.5abeer.ai/v1Authorization: Bearer <KEY>https://api.5abeer.aix-api-key: <KEY>https://api.5abeer.ai/v1betax-goog-api-key: <KEY>Prices and details are on the API page, and creating a key is explained in Keys and authentication.
What other ways are there to pay?#
If what you want is the official apps rather than the API, 5abeer plans run Claude Code, Codex, Claude Desktop and ChatGPT Desktop on your own official account, through the 5abeer AI app on Mac, Windows and Linux. Subscribe to the official apps for less than their official price. The plans are on the pricing page.
5abeer takes international cards on Stripe's secure payment page; the card must support international payments. The full card number never reaches us, and we don't store it. The methods available right now show when you pay, as explained in Payment methods.

Frequently asked questions#
Why is my card declined when it has enough money?#
Enough funds is only one of the checks. The bank can still decline the payment if international online purchases are off, if the amount is above the card's online limit, or if its fraud checks stopped a first payment to a merchant abroad. Your bank can tell you which one it was.
Can I use a prepaid card?#
Not for OpenAI API credits: OpenAI says only standard credit or debit cards are supported there. Anthropic's page lists credit and debit cards and doesn't mention prepaid cards, so a regular credit or debit card is the safer choice.
Can I pay for Claude with PayPal?#
Not on the website. Anthropic says it accepts credit and debit cards only, not PayPal or Venmo. If you subscribe in the Claude phone app, the App Store or Google Play handles the payment with the methods on your account there.
Why did my ChatGPT renewal fail?#
OpenAI's help pages say a renewal can fail when you or your card's issuer aren't in a supported country, and suggest checking the card details, the billing address and the expiry date. Check those, then ask your bank whether it declined the charge.
Why is the price different in the phone app?#
Subscriptions bought through the App Store or Google Play are billed by Apple or Google, and OpenAI says ChatGPT subscriptions from the app stores are billed in local currency. Anthropic says the prices on its website don't include applicable tax. So the amount you pay can differ between the app and the website.
Does 5abeer accept my card?#
5abeer takes international cards on Stripe's secure payment page, and the card must support international payments. The methods available right now show when you pay, as explained in Payment methods.
Is 5abeer part of OpenAI or Anthropic?#
No. 5abeer is an independent service, not affiliated with OpenAI, Anthropic or Google.
