# ChatGPT Plus vs Pro: what does Pro add?

> ChatGPT Plus and the three Pro plans compared by OpenAI's own numbers on price, thinking levels, context windows, usage limits and Codex.

Updated: 2026-11-01

ChatGPT Plus fits most people who use ChatGPT every day. ChatGPT Pro costs several times more and adds the Extra High and Pro thinking levels, larger context windows, longer Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions, and three usage tiers. Choose Pro only if you hit Plus's limits often or need Pro reasoning.

## What is the difference between ChatGPT Plus and Pro?

This is how OpenAI describes the two plans on its [pricing page](https://chatgpt.com/pricing) and in its [models article](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/20001354), as we read them on 2026-11-01:

|  | ChatGPT Plus | ChatGPT Pro |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Monthly plans | One | Three: Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 |
| Thinking levels in Chat | Medium and High | Medium, High, Extra High and Pro |
| Pro reasoning in Chat | Not included | Included, with a weekly message limit |
| Codex and ChatGPT Work | Expanded Codex use and ChatGPT Work access | Longer Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions |
| Response speed | Fast | Fast; Ultrafast on Pro 500 only |
| Context window, Instant mode | 54K | 128K |
| Context window, reasoning mode | 256K | 400K |
| Maximum input, reasoning mode | About 320 pages of text | About 680 pages of text |
| Deep research | Expanded | Maximum |
| Dot, OpenAI's always-on agent | Not included | Included |

Both plans include voice, image creation, file uploads, projects and custom GPTs, with more use of several of them on Pro. The rows above are the main differences. OpenAI updates these pages often, so check the date above and the sources before you decide.

## How much do ChatGPT Plus and Pro cost?

These are the monthly prices on OpenAI's website in the US, each row with its source and the date we checked it:

| Plan | Market and channel | Official price | Billing | Source | Checked |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ChatGPT Go | United States · Vendor website | $8 | per month | https://openai.com/index/introducing-chatgpt-go/ | 2026-10-31 |
| ChatGPT Plus | United States · Vendor website | $20 | per month | https://help.openai.com/en/articles/6950777-what-is-chatgpt-plus | 2026-10-31 |
| ChatGPT Pro 100 | United States · Vendor website | $100 | per month | https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9793128-about-chatgpt-pro-tiers | 2026-10-31 |

Pro comes as three monthly plans, Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500, and each is named after its monthly price in US dollars. The table also lists ChatGPT Go, the lower-priced plan below Plus. OpenAI bills Plus and Pro monthly only, with no annual billing.

Prices can differ by country and by where you pay. For local prices, read [ChatGPT Plus price in Egypt](https://5abeer.ai/en/guides/chatgpt-plus-price-egypt) or [Prices in Saudi Arabia and the UAE](https://5abeer.ai/en/guides/chatgpt-claude-gulf-price).

## How do Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 differ?

The three Pro plans differ in how much usage they include and in speed:

| Pro plan | Included usage | Ultrafast |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Pro 100 | The entry Pro level | Not included |
| Pro 200 | More usage than Pro 100 | Not included |
| Pro 500 | The highest included usage | Included |

In its latest update, OpenAI doubled the Work and Codex allowance on Pro 100 and Pro 500. On Pro 200 the lower allowance doubled, so every Pro 200 subscription now has the same Work and Codex allowance. OpenAI says Plus usage did not change, and that, at launch, buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 doesn't unlock Ultrafast.

## What are the usage limits on Plus and Pro?

Both plans have limits. This is what OpenAI's help pages say about them:

- **Plus** may have usage limits such as message caps, especially at times of high demand, and these limits can vary with system conditions.
- **Pro** includes more usage, but it still has limits. Pro reasoning has a weekly message limit in Chat, and Codex and ChatGPT Work have their own allowances, separate from Chat.
- **On Pro 200**, when you reach the weekly Pro reasoning limit, ChatGPT switches you to an earlier Thinking model at Medium. **On Pro 100**, the two Pro reasoning models share one weekly allowance, and switching between them doesn't add messages.
- **At a limit**, a model may be unavailable until its allowance resets, and ChatGPT shows the reset time when it can. OpenAI says you can't raise a limit through a setting, and its support team can't reset ChatGPT or Codex limits.

Speed costs usage too. Compared with Standard mode for the same model, Fast mode uses your included allowance at 2.5 times the rate, and Ultrafast at 8 times. On Pro 500, once the included allowance is used, Ultrafast draws from your credit balance at 6 times the Standard credit rate.

## Which models and thinking levels come with each plan?

In Chat you pick a model, then set how long it thinks. OpenAI's models article lists the thinking levels each plan includes:

| Thinking level | ChatGPT Plus | ChatGPT Pro |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Medium and High | Included | Included |
| Extra High | Not included | Included |
| Pro | Not included | Included |

On OpenAI's pricing page, Plus and Pro list the same current models, with expanded use on Pro, and an older Pro reasoning model is listed for Pro only. The model behind Pro reasoning today is also in Plus, but only inside ChatGPT Work and Codex: Pro has it in Chat, Work and Codex. If you use Codex CLI, OpenAI says this model needs version 0.153.0 or newer.

## Plus or Pro: which one fits you?

| Your situation | Plan that fits |
| --- | --- |
| You use ChatGPT daily for writing, study or questions | Plus |
| You hit Plus's limits most days | Pro 100 or Pro 200 |
| You need Extra High or Pro thinking in Chat | Pro |
| You work with very long documents | Pro, for its larger context window |
| You want Ultrafast responses | Pro 500 |
| You code with Codex for hours a day | Pro, or a 5abeer Bundle plan |
| You want the models inside your own code | An API key, billed per token |

## Is there another way to run ChatGPT and Codex?

5abeer is an independent service, not affiliated with OpenAI, Anthropic or Google. Its Bundle plans run the official apps, ChatGPT Desktop and Codex, plus Claude Desktop, Claude Code and Google Antigravity, for less than the official price:

Current 5abeer Bundle plan prices are on the pricing page: https://5abeer.ai/en/pricing

Before you compare, be clear on the differences:

- 5abeer's Bundle plans are Pro, Max (formerly Max 5x) and Ultra (formerly Max 20x). These are 5abeer's plans: 5abeer's Pro is not ChatGPT Pro, and 5abeer's Max and Ultra are not Anthropic's plans with the same names.
- Every Bundle plan runs every app, and the plans differ in usage limits only. 5abeer's Max has 5 times the limits of 5abeer's Pro, and 5abeer's Ultra has 20 times, each with a 5-hour limit and a weekly limit, as in [Usage limits](https://5abeer.ai/en/docs/subscriptions/limits.md).
- The plan works in the desktop apps through the 5abeer AI app on Mac, Windows and Linux, not inside the phone app.
- On your own official account: Codex asks for your own ChatGPT account.

What each app runs on 5abeer is on [ChatGPT](https://5abeer.ai/en/apps/chatgpt) and [Codex](https://5abeer.ai/en/apps/codex), and the plans are compared on the [pricing page](https://5abeer.ai/en/pricing).

**With an API key:** plans are for the supported apps, and to use OpenAI models from your own code you need an API key. 5abeer's API follows the OpenAI format. Codex CLI reads a custom provider from `~/.codex/config.toml` and takes the key from the environment variable that `env_key` names:

`~/.codex/config.toml`

```toml
model = "gpt-6.1-sol"
model_provider = "khabeer"
[model_providers.khabeer]
name = "5abeer"
base_url = "https://api.5abeer.ai/v1"
env_key = "KHABEER_API_KEY"
wire_api = "responses"
```

The steps are in [Codex CLI setup](https://5abeer.ai/en/docs/apps/codex.md), and the per-token prices are on [OpenAI API](https://5abeer.ai/en/api/openai).

## FAQ

### Is ChatGPT Pro worth it over Plus?

It depends on how much you use it. Pro costs several times as much as Plus, so it pays off if you hit Plus's limits often, need Extra High or Pro thinking in Chat, or work with documents too long for Plus's context window. For daily writing and questions, Plus covers most people.

### Which Pro plan should I start with?

Start with Pro 100 if you want Extra High and Pro thinking. Move to Pro 200 for more usage, or to Pro 500 if you need Ultrafast, which only Pro 500 includes.

### Does ChatGPT Pro remove usage limits?

No. OpenAI says Pro has usage limits, including a weekly message limit for Pro reasoning in Chat and separate allowances for Codex and ChatGPT Work. At a limit, wait for the reset or switch to another available model.

### Do Plus and Pro include Codex?

Yes, both include Codex. Pro adds longer Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions. OpenAI keeps the usage rules for Codex and ChatGPT Work separate from Chat.

### Is there an annual ChatGPT plan?

No. OpenAI bills Plus and Pro monthly, and you can't pay for several months in advance.

### Does a ChatGPT plan include the OpenAI API?

Plus doesn't: OpenAI bills API usage separately. OpenAI's pricing page lists monthly API credits with Pro. They need activation, and unused credits expire at the end of each billing cycle, so check the amount and terms there. To call OpenAI models from your own code through 5abeer, you need a 5abeer API key, billed per token.

### Is 5abeer's Pro plan the same as ChatGPT Pro?

No. Pro, Max (formerly Max 5x) and Ultra (formerly Max 20x) are 5abeer's own plans. They run the official apps, including ChatGPT Desktop and Codex, each with a 5-hour limit and a weekly limit that 5abeer sets, not OpenAI.
